Yeah, they're the band we all love to hate, but I have to say, I gave a good listen to one of the new songs, "My Apocalypse," and damn!
The new album, "Death Magnetic" is out September 12th, but you can get two songs now on iTunes.
Incredibly, "My Apocalypse" is thrash... the real, genuine stuff. They haven't done anything like this since "Justice"... 20 years.
The riffs are fast, heavy, and hearken back to the early and mid-80s. Lars' snare drum is still a little annoying, but not nearly as much as on St. Anger, and Kirk is playing solos again!
Judging from this and some of the other favorable reviews, I'm actually excited to hear the rest of it. For all of the bashing everyone likes to do, we often forget that this was the band that gave us "Ride the Lightning" and "Master of Puppets" all those many, fabled years ago.
I grew up in the Bay Area, and I've been with 'Tallica since 1982; I remember when Dave Mustaine was still in the band. I saw them twice with Cliff, including the world premier of the songs "Master of Puppets" and "Disposable Heroes."
"Death Magnetic" could possibly be their best album in two decades. If so, it will join the ranks of the excellent new "retro" CDs by Exodus, Testament, Death Angel, Megadeth, and Slayer (a couple of years ago on that one) and confirm that 80s thrash is back!
Welcome back boys, we've missed you!

Re: New Metallica songs on iTunes
Thu, October 23, 2008 - 4:39 PMIt took a bit for the new CD to grow on me...and it didn't take that long. Good CD with flashes from the past.
I do disagree with the "retro" thrash reference since...IT'S THRASH! (period). For me, the bands never went away, they just were just waiting to pounce once again! -

Re: New Metallica songs on iTunes
Thu, October 23, 2008 - 6:29 PMWith the release of Death Magnetic, I have officially forgiven them for Load, Reload, and St. Anger. ;-)
I love it. I listen to it at least once a day. Whether it was Rock Rubin or Rob Trujillo, or whoever that brought them back, I'm very grateful!
Actually, all I meant by "retro" was that these bands have pretty much recently released their best albums since the 80s heydays, and it's quite a nostalgic trip for those of us that were there the first time... -

Thu, October 23, 2008 - 6:42 PMNo worries on that "retro" ref. I just hear that a lot.
I like that fact that some of the old thrash acts are coming back and that there's some newer bands adapting the sound. Hate to say it, but I'm getting a bit bored with
"cookie monster" metal. Don't really care how "brutal" it's supposed to be...I needs the chuga chuga riffs man! -

Re: New Metallica songs on iTunes
Fri, October 24, 2008 - 9:59 AMThe only problem I have with the new album is that the songs sound like they took parts of this song and that song and cobbled them together to make new Franken-thrash songs. But it's still light years ahead of anything they've don in the last 2 decades.
And to all the people who complain about the sound quality.... PFFFFT! It's metal! Play it loud and get a life!
