How did you become hooked?

How did every one get hooked on Thrash? What is your story?

For me it was two different tales.

1st. I heard Masters of Puppets from a friend and didn't quite know what to think. It sounded catchy and interesting but wasn't what I expected.

2nd. I was with some friends and we went to the mall to steal the new album from some band called Testament. The album, Practice what you Preach.
After the theft, we got in the car and cranked this Fast, Furious, and awsome music.

From that point forward I was true Metal Head, thrashing my head till it was hurt, then thrashed some more. I'll never be the same again. Ain't it wonderfull?

I was mostly listening to early 80's rock tunes in South Carolina. (about 5 years behind the rest of the world at that time) I heard Sabbath at the age of 10 and it was over! I moved to Los Angeles at 12 and picked up a Slayer record (Show No Mercy) at a buddies house and there you go!

    Hello,

For me, it was something like this:

1981: AC/DC, For Those About To Rock -- "This is the heaviest thing I ever heard!"
1981: Van Halen, And The Cradle Will Rock -- "No, _this_ is the heaviest thing i've ever heard!" (repeat above for "Unchained")
1982: Iron Maiden, Flight of Icarus -- "No, wait, _this_ is definitely the heaviest thing i've ever heard!"
1984: Metallica, For Whom The Bell Tolls -- "OK, this is, without a doubt, the heaviest thing i've ever heard, it can't possibly be any heavier!"
1986: Metallica, Master Of Puppets -- "Yikes, it got heavier! How could this possibly be?"
1988: Exodus, Slayer, Anthrax, Overkill, Megadeth, Armoured Saint, Fates Warning, Suicidal Tendencies, Omen -- "Wow, heavier yet! Is there truly no limit to heaviness?"
1988: SOD -- "OK, this is the coolest, heaviest thing i've ever encountered!"
1988: Nuclear Assault, Savatage, Testament in concert -- "Damn, this is f*cking heavy! Look at those people, like popcorn, crowd surfing! I want to do that!" (later, after a bouncer threw him headfirst into a wall) "Owww, I just want to go home ..." (later that week after I recovered, I saw Fates Warning on the Perfect Symmetry tour)
1989: Tori Amos, Precious Things -- "You know, that song is pretty damn heavy."
1989: Ministry, Thieves -- "Speed-metal industrial noise? Damn, this is another kind of heavy, altogether!"
1989: Pop Will Eat Itself, Defcon 1 -- "Cool, techno-metal!"
1989: Sepultura, Arise -- "OK, there is just no way anything could get heavier than this!"
1990: Mucky Pup, Skinny Puppy, Nitzer Ebb, Seers, Fates Warning "Parallels", Ministry's Psalm 69
1991: Fear Factory, Death, Pantera, PWEI Cure For Sanity, more Skinny Puppy, Morbid Angel
1993: Pitchshifter, Industrial -- "OK Ok ok ok ok ok ok now this is abso-fuggin-lutely the heaviest thing in existence!"
1994: Sebadoh, Bang Your Head On The Punk Rock -- "Wow, this is so raw and noisy and strangely heavy at times."
1995: Metallica, Load -- "Uh ... did someone mislabel this CD? This can't be Metallica."
1996: Sepultura, Chaos AD -- "Damn, this is __so__ heavy! Refuse! Resist!"

... then I didn't really hear of much new metal, until recently:

2004: Soilwork, As We Speak -- "WOW!"
    2004: Darkane, "more WOW!"
2004: Slayer, God Hates Us All -- "WOW!!!"
2005: Fear Factory, Asphyxiate -- "WOW!!!!!"

    Regards,

John, lots of other music genres in there over the years as well, but it all begins and ends with metal, does it not? :-)

Oh, and I know they're not really thrash, but the new Fates Warning, "FWX", is _really_ incredible, and the heaviest thing they've done in awhile. Very, very good stuff, in my humble opinion.

Fate's is great! FWX... is it more like Spectre or No Exit.. as you said it was heavier?
        • Re: How did you become hooked?

          Jonny,

FWX is more like Parallels I think, but with a bit more electronic elements used in the music. Make no mistake, though -- it's a metal album :-) It's not super-fast like No Exit, but in comparison to A Pleasant Shade Of Gray and Disconnected (both of which I really, really like) it's more aggressive and heavier. It just works really well imho ... it's as if the band hasn't aged a day.

I've not heard Spectre Within in _so_ long ... nor Awaken The Guardian, though I used to have both of these years ago. These days, the earliest FW I have is No Exit, but i've almost everything from that point on. It would be cool to rediscover the older stuff, though.

          Regards,

          John

I have "Night On Brocken" and "No Exit" on vinyl! I don't know much about their new stuff, I'd like to here more. I've mostly concentrating on my music.. I haven't been paying much attention to anyone. I got "Spectre" and "Awaken" on cassette. Tells you how long it's been since i've heard new Fate's!

It all started for me before bay area thrash.
I worked with a friend that played giutar, who eventually produced a couple of his own albums" Warlord" was the name of the band, he got me hooked on the british invasion. Back when you could only get Iron Maiden on import. I saw Judas Priest warm up for Zeppelin when I was 13 and revisited there progress on British Steel.
While in the military, I would buy tapes that had cool art on the cover.( Exodus- bonded by blood, Metalica- ride the Lightning & Merciful fate- don't break the oath)
Noticing that alot of the these bands were coming out of the area I grew up in was all it took.

Way back to the early 80s, when Mustaine was still in Metallica, and then "Metal Up Your Ass" was the original title of "Kill 'em All", was when I discovered it all, having been a big fan of Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, and Ozzy.

                  82-83ish, that was.

I heard Black Metal by Venom, and then Melissa by Mercyful fate (not thrash, but still brilliant). I saw Exodus for the first time when they opened for Anthrax and Raven (remember when they were good?!) in July 1984. Venom had recently released At War with Satan.

Ride the Lightning was out shortly thereafter, then Don't Break the Oath by Fate. Then I saw Metallica at the Kabuki in SF with Cliff, in Feb. 1985. I was totally hooked by then. By the time Bonded by Blood came out, and then Hell Awaits by Slayer, I was in metal heaven!

I attended the 85/86 New Year's Eve show in SF that featured Megadeth, Metal Church, Exodus, and Metallica. They premiered Master of Puppets and Disposable heroes that night (this was about 2 months before Puppets was released).

                  Ah, what memories!

Master of Puppets when I was in 7th grade I think. That album altered the direction of my life. From there onto Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer naturally. In the 90s I went on metal hiatus and veered (backwards?) into punk. I've now emerged into 00's and I must say I'm pretty fucking excited.

I'm gonna second John's excitement for Soilwork and Darkane. I'm also lovin Mastodon. If you're into ultra-heavy but melodic check out Panopticon by Isis. I'm wearing out my hard drive listening to it.

I haven't really listened to anything Slayer has made since the album after Seasons. I've heard a lot of good things about the new one though.

I don't know *anything* about Fear Factory. I'll have to find some online previews or something.

for me, it was also the Bay Area Thrash scene in the early 80's that did start off with Metallica. I was a senior in highschool at the time and got hooked on Ron Quintana's Rampage Radio on KUSF. I remember hearing parties on the air with likes Metallica and Exodus. I remember going to the Stone, the Mab and the On Broadway to see all the killer shit like Death Angel (these guys were just kids), Exodus, Metallica, Megadeth, Testament and a whole bunch of other bands from the day. ALL IN THEIR FUCKIN' PRIME!

I remember driving home one night from some show and I heard Ron mentioning on the Rampage that he didn't want anyone coming down to hang out because he just found out that Cliff died. I remember being bummed out as fuck that I got pulled over by the cops because I swerved looking for a pay phone to make some calls (cel phones RULE). Anyway, the drunk driving laws were a hell of lot more laxed - or the cops were being mellow - that they had me park my car and go walk home (I wasn't that fucked up). Man, SF was a different time back then.

Fuckn' hell! Good fuckn' topic Scrap!

Terror.. man, I got C L I F tatooed on my knuckles bro! (I'm a bassist) He was my hero back then! My nickname in LA County Jail was Cliffie! You are the only one i've heard mention Mr. Burton. Cudos!!! I still listen to Testament, Mercyful Fate, Death Angel and fucking Bonded by Blood!!! Show no Mercy!! Fuck, Haunting The Chapple!! even... "Killing Is My Buisiness And Buisiness Is Good"!!!! Damn! "Melissa" .... i could go on and on...

            Jonny, Terror et al ...

Yes, I remember hearing about the demise of the good Mr. Burton as well, and being quite bummed about it. I do appreciate the band's desire to continue making music, though. I didn't know Clif Burton at all, so I cannot say whether that would be his wish or not, but Metallica did make at least one good album (or more, depending on your perspective) afterwards ... Justice.

Damn, I remember Bonded By Blood, Pleasures Of The Flesh (esp. "Chemikill", which I think was my favorite song on that album), Hell Awaits, etc. And yes, I still listen to the old stuff (New Order, Peace Sells, Horrorscope, South of Heaven, Arise, etc.) regularly. However, I find it difficult to listen to "Killing Is My Business ..." -- the way it's mixed bothers me. "Peace Sells ...", however, is mixed flawlessly imho, and that is far and away my favorite Megadeth (with "Rust In Peace" probably being second).

Terror -- Fear Factory is incredible! I really like this stuff. I'm also always looking for new speed / thrash ... Soilwork, Darkane, and i'm interested in hearing more Primer 55, Spineshank, anything else heavy and fast :-)

            Regards,

            John

Oh god... my first experience was sort of accidental, i guess you could say. I went to a little thing called the Cherry Blossom Festival years ago and saw a guy selling some cassettes so i went to check it out. At that time, I was mainly listening to the older metal like Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Blue Oyster Cult, so i figured why not try something a little newer. I ended up buying Seventh Son of a Seventh Son by Iron Maiden, The Legacy by Testament, The Dark by Metal Church, and Painkiller by Judas Priest. I took them all back home and gave em a whirl, and i felt as if I were in pure heaven (or hell, i guess may be a better term for this music).

Since then, I've been really getting into a lot of metal, but have stuck as close to thrash as I possibly could, bein that it is/was/and ever will be the best out there. My favorite albums of all time would have to be:

    Slayer - Reign In Blood
Exodus - Bonded By Blood (Fabulous Disaster is great as well)
Tankard - The Morning After (or Chemical Invasion)
Voivod - Dimension Hatross (or Killing Technology)
    Dark Angel - Darkness Descends
Anthrax - Among The Living (Caught In A Mosh rules!!)
    Sepultura - Arise
    Forbidden - Forbidden Evil
Metallica - Master Of Puppets (RIP Cliff)
Megadeth - Killing Is My Business... And Business Is Good
Coven - Blessed Is The Black

And a host of others, too numerous to mention.

    THRASH TILL DEATH!!!

I was hanging out at the local convenience store, Minit Mart, eastin time, and a guy pulled up with Testament's Legacy playing "first Strike is Deadly" at full blast. I asked him who and what thatw as, and then walked over to a music store and promptle stole the tape, and I've been a metalhead ever since. I was in 7th grade, prbably 1988. I was already listening to MC5, Wizard, Sweet, Sabbath and Rainbow. Testament is still my favorite band, then Exodus, Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies, and of course Megadeth.

First heard Metallica's Master Of Puppets on a college rock/metal station, then discovered Slayer- Reign In Blood (my fave album ) on my own. At the time I was a Motley Crue and hair metal (it's really Hard Rock) fan, thrash opened the True metal doors for me. I also like Exodus,Venom,Sepultura,Annihilator,Testament,Death Angel,Obituary,Death, Cannibal Corpse. Mostly 80s thrash bands.
