Re: Favorite Thrash Bands?
Sun, July 11, 2004 - 11:51 PMYeah, I would definitely consider songs like Fight Fire with Fire, Creeping Death, Battery, and Damage Inc., etc. to be SF thrash. Also Blackened and Dyer's Eve. Early Megadeth, too. What they became later is a different story... -
-
Re: Favorite Thrash Bands?
Mon, July 12, 2004 - 12:46 AMDefinitely Death Angel.
I'm always gonna mark out for Metallica - old or new, I'm a fan for life.
Megadeth
Slayer
Exodus
Anthrax
Vio-lence
Mercyful Fate
Suicidal Tendencies (punk/thrash - it's still cool)

Yeah, I was at the shows at the Fillmore in SF when Rob just joined the band (I think it's been about a year now) - I forgot how much I really liked these guys.
I guess it's just history from being in the early thrash scene in SF with 'em. METALLICA will always rock!

Wed, September 1, 2004 - 9:48 PM
Hello,
Of course i'm a huge fan of early Megadeth (Peace Sells), early Metallica (and even St. Anger, which I actually think is pretty cool), early Testament, Exodus (Pleasures of the Flesh), early Overkill, Slayer, early Anthrax, Armoured Saint (Raising Fear), Helloween (7 Keys pt 1), etc. Some other favorites are:
Fates Warning (probably my all-time favorite, from the early speed metal to the moody beauty of Perfect Symmetry and Parallels ... have not had the pleasure of hearing Pleasant Shade of Grey, but damn I want to)
Omen ( "he feared ... the Axeman!")
Soilwork (not sure if they're considered speed metal or nu-metal or whatever, but I dig 'em)
Morbid Angel <smiles widely when he hears them>
Darkane
Sepultura (more smiling widely ensues)
Soulfly
Fear Factory
... that cool thrashy part in Nitzer Ebb's "Godhead"
... and a lot of others i've probably forgotten.
Regards,
John

Re: Favorite Thrash Bands?
Tue, October 5, 2004 - 10:04 PMNow, we all know Fate's Warning was not thrash. Although "Anarchy Divine" was fast! "The Spectre Within" Was really HEAVY, and "Awaken the Guardian" was just as heavy as prog has ever gotten... Fates Warning is just not THRASH! Don't get me wrong... I love Fates... but after "No Exit", they emerged themselves in the dark, progressive side of metal.
Sometimes I wonder what they would sound like if they took a different path!
I thought I was the only Fates Warning fan left!!! -

Jonny,
Yes, I adore FW. Have you heard "FWX" yet? Beautiful ... to this day, whenever the clouds hang low and grey, I look outside, feel the coming storm, and think "Damn, I need to play some FW" :-)
Yes, not thrash, but "No Exit" (named after Sartre's play?) was close -- and fast.
Regards,
John, glad to meet another :-)

Re: Favorite Thrash Bands?
Thu, February 17, 2005 - 10:22 AMMy answer part 2:
early Death(I think that in their early days they fit into that proto-death metal category that Sepultura, and even Slayer were a part of as well)
Shadows Fall - Blending chugging thrash with the harmonization and melodic foundation of Swedish Melodic Death, and a touch of Hardcore energy...
Carnal Forge - new school swedish thrash
Raise Hell - Swedish blackened thrash, only good on their first album imo
and I'm sure theres more, but I'm blanking right now -
-
Re: Favorite Thrash Bands?
Thu, February 17, 2005 - 4:57 PMHmmm..... Carnal Forge, almost forgot about them. Please... Die! was pretty good, Scream Bloody Gore by Death was great as well. I think Death did a Priest cover once, can't rightly remember which album that was on, I just remember they did a decent job. -

Sun, May 15, 2005 - 3:16 PMIt's great to meet some fellow thrashers! Favourite bands other than the 'big four'- Testament, Voivod, Celtic Frost, Sabbat. Anyone notice how gigs are really tame nowadays? But then maybe we killed off the excitement when the venues started to getting sued. Anyway I ended up listening to Slayer while I was in Iraq. How about Arch Enemy, The Haunted, Strapping Young Lad? -

Mon, May 16, 2005 - 3:11 PMExodus "Tempo of the Damned"
I recommend that you download or borrow the album. In my opinion, it was the best metal album of 2004. It is a brutal album. Old school Exodus with an updated sound.
Accused are cool. I have a few tapes of them somewhere.

Actually I'm having a lot of fun trying to metalize the hippies, a lot of them came from metal roots (actually I have a lot of fun mixing as many scenes as I can, anyone who gets snobby about the other kids can suck my ****). I've started throwing massively mixed parties that run the gamut from traditional ravey stuff to industrial and metallic hybrids, and I've figured out that really rhythmically tight bands like Slayer translate really well into electronic remixes (at 145 bpm, Seasons in the Abyss starts to turn into something that does strange stuff to acidheads). I like my dark and energetic music, and I don't really care how it's made.
It's just really hard to keep the gutter punks from slam dancing with the E-tarded psy-trancers.
Not that I always want to.... -

Re: Favorite Thrash Bands?
Wed, November 30, 2005 - 3:44 PMI couldn't have written anything in the format of:
"_______ is SO like ______"
Like, you do realize that this is a THRASH METAL tribe right??? I've been listening to it for almost two decades now, but I'm not too sure that it's really the "in" thing in these first years of the 21st century.
It's not as if Anthrax or Sepultura are tearing up the MTV charts or anything (I think, mind you I don't watch MTV so maybe they are finding some kind of mainstream success that I don't know about). -
-
Re: Favorite Thrash Bands?
Wed, November 30, 2005 - 6:38 PMI would have to say that Thrash Metal was never truly a "mainstream" genre.
Honestly, that's the way I prefer it.
But, yes, due to the resurgence of HeadBangers Ball on Mtv there has been more old school Thrash bands releasing new albums.
Such as Exodus (2 in two years) and Death Angel to name a couple. Also, Slayer, Overkill, and Testament albums are still doing well.
There are also newer bands who have alot of Thrash influences like In Flames, 3 inches of Blood, Nevermore, and Shadows Fall.
But the main thing is we love Thrash Metal and aren't shy about showing it. We like the purity and the energy that Thrash gives and will never give up on it.

Re: Favorite Thrash Bands?
Fri, June 23, 2006 - 11:46 PMshadows fall fucking sucks dude. i am so sick of these loser Emo-death metal bands like "bullet for my valentine" and those dicks that covered a bon jovi song Atreyu-you are totally NOT metal if you cover bon jovi.
All That Remains crushes shadows fall. if you are gonna sing clear vocals, then sing, but dont sound like some blink 182 wanna be while doing it.
Mikal akefeldt from Opeth puts all these poseurs to shame.

Re: Favorite Thrash Bands?
Sat, June 24, 2006 - 6:29 AMSome people thin Bon Jovi is metal. lol To me they are like pop and country music. They don't even look cool. I just got a dvd from Netflix of Testament Live In London 2005. I really liked it alot. The two guitarists are really really good!!! They all are but the guitarists really stand out. They are bad as hell! -

Dio Fucking Rocks
That old Itailian is one of the coolest dudes In metal.
for that matter, back in the early thrash days who didn't own Holy diver?
Priest~ Screaming for Vengence?
Y&T~ Black Tiger?
Iron Maiden ~ Number of the beast?
hell.... I even had Scorpion albums my girlfriend and I used to fuck too.
Still, when Hell Awaits came out, it was hard to keep my ears tuned to anything that didn't come from Metal Blade , megaforce or Combat Records :)
