Death Angel
Metallica (through Puppets)
Venom and Mercyful Fate (not thrash, but part of that whole 80s underground metal scene that was so vibrant in the SF Bay Area then) -
-
Re: Favorite Thrash Bands?
Sun, July 11, 2004 - 7:25 AMI would'nt classify Metallica, Megadeth or Pantera Trash though... More Just heavy Metal... And Venom and Mercyful Fate are like, Old Black Metal. They're all fuckin' awesome though! -

Re: Favorite Thrash Bands?
Sun, July 11, 2004 - 7:38 AMMegadeth's beginnings were in Thrash. -

Re: Favorite Thrash Bands?
Sun, July 11, 2004 - 5:06 PMMy list is:
Exodus
Testament
Slayer
Overkill
Metal Church
As for the other topic brewing, Metallica and Megadeth started as thrash in the early days. Pantera, though started late, is concidered thrash in many ways. -

Re: Favorite Thrash Bands?
Sun, July 11, 2004 - 5:08 PMI forgot to give honorary mention to Anthrax, Sepultura, Helloween, and Death Angel.
Any more it varies from day to day. Hence the reason I have a 10 disc cd changer. -
-
Re: Favorite Thrash Bands?
Sun, July 11, 2004 - 11:51 PMYeah, I would definitely consider songs like Fight Fire with Fire, Creeping Death, Battery, and Damage Inc., etc. to be SF thrash. Also Blackened and Dyer's Eve. Early Megadeth, too. What they became later is a different story... -
-
Re: Favorite Thrash Bands?
Mon, July 12, 2004 - 12:46 AMDefinitely Death Angel.
I'm always gonna mark out for Metallica - old or new, I'm a fan for life.
Megadeth
Slayer
Exodus
Anthrax
Vio-lence
Mercyful Fate
Suicidal Tendencies (punk/thrash - it's still cool)
...and I'm throwing in Motorhead since I'm listening to the new CD right now. -

Re: Favorite Thrash Bands?
Tue, July 13, 2004 - 1:17 PMThat's the beauty of having an opinion, no one can take it from you. If they tell you your wrong about what you think about a certain band, tell them to fuck off.
So sit back and enjoy the music!

You ain't the only one...
Yeah, I was at the shows at the Fillmore in SF when Rob just joined the band (I think it's been about a year now) - I forgot how much I really liked these guys.
I guess it's just history from being in the early thrash scene in SF with 'em. METALLICA will always rock!

Wed, September 1, 2004 - 9:48 PM
Hello,
Of course i'm a huge fan of early Megadeth (Peace Sells), early Metallica (and even St. Anger, which I actually think is pretty cool), early Testament, Exodus (Pleasures of the Flesh), early Overkill, Slayer, early Anthrax, Armoured Saint (Raising Fear), Helloween (7 Keys pt 1), etc. Some other favorites are:
Fates Warning (probably my all-time favorite, from the early speed metal to the moody beauty of Perfect Symmetry and Parallels ... have not had the pleasure of hearing Pleasant Shade of Grey, but damn I want to)
Omen ( "he feared ... the Axeman!")
Soilwork (not sure if they're considered speed metal or nu-metal or whatever, but I dig 'em)
Morbid Angel <smiles widely when he hears them>
Darkane
Sepultura (more smiling widely ensues)
Soulfly
Fear Factory
... that cool thrashy part in Nitzer Ebb's "Godhead"
... and a lot of others i've probably forgotten.
Regards,
John

Re: Favorite Thrash Bands?
Tue, October 5, 2004 - 10:04 PMNow, we all know Fate's Warning was not thrash. Although "Anarchy Divine" was fast! "The Spectre Within" Was really HEAVY, and "Awaken the Guardian" was just as heavy as prog has ever gotten... Fates Warning is just not THRASH! Don't get me wrong... I love Fates... but after "No Exit", they emerged themselves in the dark, progressive side of metal.
Sometimes I wonder what they would sound like if they took a different path!
I thought I was the only Fates Warning fan left!!! -

Jonny,
Yes, I adore FW. Have you heard "FWX" yet? Beautiful ... to this day, whenever the clouds hang low and grey, I look outside, feel the coming storm, and think "Damn, I need to play some FW" :-)
Yes, not thrash, but "No Exit" (named after Sartre's play?) was close -- and fast.
Regards,
John, glad to meet another :-)

Sat, November 13, 2004 - 3:16 PMoh and I too love Megadeth but I never considered them thrash. In my mind they were always speed metal.

Re: Favorite Thrash Bands?
Fri, December 31, 2004 - 1:28 AMS.O.D. has some great stuff. I don't know if you would call them thrash either but they are definately heavy and fast.
Seen them twice and would love to see anither album from them. But the way they work it won't be till 2010 or so for #3.
Bad Brains-R.K.L. and Dr. Know are killer also. Man I miss the old days. -

Dark Angel
Death Angel

Re: Favorite Thrash Bands?
Thu, February 17, 2005 - 10:22 AMMy answer part 2:
early Death(I think that in their early days they fit into that proto-death metal category that Sepultura, and even Slayer were a part of as well)
Shadows Fall - Blending chugging thrash with the harmonization and melodic foundation of Swedish Melodic Death, and a touch of Hardcore energy...
Carnal Forge - new school swedish thrash
Raise Hell - Swedish blackened thrash, only good on their first album imo
and I'm sure theres more, but I'm blanking right now -
-
Re: Favorite Thrash Bands?
Thu, February 17, 2005 - 4:57 PMHmmm..... Carnal Forge, almost forgot about them. Please... Die! was pretty good, Scream Bloody Gore by Death was great as well. I think Death did a Priest cover once, can't rightly remember which album that was on, I just remember they did a decent job. -

Re: Favorite Thrash Bands?
Thu, February 17, 2005 - 5:31 PMDeath ALWAYS did a "pretty decent job" on anything the did... I have a particular love for "Zombie Ritual"... that harmonized intro is just BADASS...
BTW... I have NO hate toward Helloween at all(LOVE em in fact), but whats with inducting them into the thrash hall of fame? Hey, they have always been Classic Metal to me... anyone want to differ on this? -
-
Re: Favorite Thrash Bands?
Sun, February 20, 2005 - 10:43 AMI haven't really heard enough of Helloween to say if I'm truly a fan or not. I have a Noise Records video called Doomsday News which contains the videos for "Halloween" and another one of their songs, can't remember the name of it right now. They aren't too bad, but they are the only two Helloween songs that I've heard. -

Re: Favorite Thrash Bands?
Wed, February 23, 2005 - 1:05 PMAs far as helloween goes. I think it comes down to what album you listen too that decides what genre of Metal they are.
I think Thrash is the closest but it is ultimately left up to the listener.
That is how I pick and choose the bands on this tribe.
I'm all for people voicing their opinions about this tribe and the bands in it.
Don't forget to post pics if you have them.

Re: Favorite Thrash Bands?
Sun, May 15, 2005 - 3:16 PMIt's great to meet some fellow thrashers! Favourite bands other than the 'big four'- Testament, Voivod, Celtic Frost, Sabbat. Anyone notice how gigs are really tame nowadays? But then maybe we killed off the excitement when the venues started to getting sued. Anyway I ended up listening to Slayer while I was in Iraq. How about Arch Enemy, The Haunted, Strapping Young Lad? -
-
Re: Favorite Thrash Bands?
Sun, May 15, 2005 - 7:08 PMWelcome back from the sand. We're glad you made it.
I think Strapping Young Lad is awsome.
As well as Arch Enemy and The Haunted.
Have you heard any Senteced, Shadows Fall, or the new Exodus album?
All great stuff. -
-
Re: Favorite Thrash Bands?
Mon, May 16, 2005 - 2:10 PMShadow's Fall are cool. I heard one track from the new Exodus album and it didn't grab me by the balls. What's the actual album like? I've never even heard of Sentenced. Anyone remember the Accused too? I saw a picture of the singer from Lamb of God wearing a t-shirt. I thought I was the only person in the world who knew about them!!
Yeah, the sand got everywhere, and I mean everywhere.
