Yeah, they're the band we all love to hate, but I have to say, I gave a good listen to one of the new songs, "My Apocalypse," and damn!

The new album, "Death Magnetic" is out September 12th, but you can get two songs now on iTunes.

Incredibly, "My Apocalypse" is thrash... the real, genuine stuff. They haven't done anything like this since "Justice"... 20 years.

The riffs are fast, heavy, and hearken back to the early and mid-80s. Lars' snare drum is still a little annoying, but not nearly as much as on St. Anger, and Kirk is playing solos again!

Judging from this and some of the other favorable reviews, I'm actually excited to hear the rest of it. For all of the bashing everyone likes to do, we often forget that this was the band that gave us "Ride the Lightning" and "Master of Puppets" all those many, fabled years ago.

I grew up in the Bay Area, and I've been with 'Tallica since 1982; I remember when Dave Mustaine was still in the band. I saw them twice with Cliff, including the world premier of the songs "Master of Puppets" and "Disposable Heroes."

"Death Magnetic" could possibly be their best album in two decades. If so, it will join the ranks of the excellent new "retro" CDs by Exodus, Testament, Death Angel, Megadeth, and Slayer (a couple of years ago on that one) and confirm that 80s thrash is back!

Welcome back boys, we've missed you!

Basically, you allow friends to access specific folders (and therefore files) on your computer which you've chosen to share. They can therefore download files onto their computer and you can do the same from the folders on their computer that they're willing to share. You can even use GigaTribe to access your computer from a remote location (work, etc...).

It's 100% safe (128-bit blowfish encryption, no spyware/adware), you can transfer huge files (no-limit) and it's easy to set up. Furthermore, all exchanges are encrypted, so no one has any way of knowing what you're exchanging with friends. For more info or to download free GigaTribe, go to http://www.gigatribe.com.
Veteran Metal Pioneer, Bob Muldowney, dies at 44
Current mood: numb

Influential heavy metal journalist Bob Muldowney died Monday, November 5 after a long battle with cardiomyopathy (heart muscle disease). He was 44 years old.

Muldowney was best known for his fanzine/magazine KICK*ASS which helped expose, support and feature such bands as RAVEN, MOTÖRHEAD, VENOM, THE RODS, TANK, EXCITER and RIOT. As well as the burgeoning underground thrash scene, giving, in some instances, the first coverage to SLAYER, MEGADETH, MEDIEVAL, OVERKILL, and ANTHRAX. Muldowney was also one of the first journalists to expose the death metal scene in its infancy, giving early press to SODOM, HELLHAMMER/CELTIC FROST, DESTRUCTION and BATHORY. It was Bob's love of true, honest metal, which drove him to deliver a demo tape of a then-unknown California band called METALLICA into the hands of then-Rock 'n' Roll Heaven store owner (and future Megaforce Records head honcho) Jonny Z — who was advertising with KICK*ASS at the time.

Bob's brutally honest approach in his coverage helped KICK*ASS develop a deep, loyal following who viewed his writings as "the metal bible." However, financial and distribution difficulties overtook the magazine and the final issue of KICK*ASS appeared in the fall of 1986.

Prior to his passing, Muldowney and fellow KICK*ASS writer Mike Hannon had begun work on a DVD history of KICK*ASS Magazine in collaboration with former OVERKILL drummer-turned-director Rat Skates. Muldowney and Hannon have also re-exposed Kick*Ass' history on this official MySpace site.

For those of you who haven't seen it. Here is Tom Araya's mention of Bob in the old Combat video, "The Ultimate Revenge".

For me it was two different tales.

1st. I heard Masters of Puppets from a friend and didn't quite know what to think. It sounded catchy and interesting but wasn't what I expected.

2nd. I was with some friends and we went to the mall to steal the new album from some band called Testament. The album, Practice what you Preach.
After the theft, we got in the car and cranked this Fast, Furious, and awsome music.

From that point forward I was true Metal Head, thrashing my head till it was hurt, then thrashed some more. I'll never be the same again. Ain't it wonderfull?
"Killing Season" album update

Wuzzup Peeps!

As I come out of the haze and begin to become unglazed from spawning our most recent effort in this life of music… "Killing Season" is almost here!

We finished recording last week and after a manic b'day weekend which took me to Vegas to see Rage Against The Machine / Muse then back to LA to catch QOTSA then back to Oakland for Halloween… I was able to get my bearings and throw down an update so here it is!

I am pleased to announce we have decided that Nick (Raskulinecz, our producer) will mix the album. The reference "rough" mixes we have been listening to are blowing our minds and we don't think anyone could do a better job taking the mix to the next level and beyond! Wait till you hear this disc, my friends, you will hear us like you never have before! This shit is SLAMMIN!!!!!!!

Mixing starts later today (it's 3am right now, children) so I better hit the sack so I can get a couple hours of shuteye and get them ears fresh to hear me some final mixes… hell yeah!

Check out my photo section for new pics from the Killing Season recording session.

Stay sweet and have a great summer!
~Rob

I knew a bit of Slayer and Anthrax too, but that was about it. I remember
one day in 1987 hearing "Probation" by DRI, so shortly thereafter I found
my way up to Berkeley and bought the Crossover LP. I don't remember the exact
circumstances of turning onto Exodus, Vio-lence, and Death Angel, but i was into
them as well.

If I recall correctly, back in 1988, Vio-lence "Eternal Nightmare", Death Angel "Frolic Through the Park",
and DRI "4 of a Kind" were all released on the very same day!

I remember seeing Vio-lence at the Stone in about 1987 or 1988. I saw DRI and Kreator there in 1990,
and possibly even in an earlier year. I know I saw Exodus and MOD at the Warfield in 1988.

I also saw many arena gigs in the late 70s and earlier 80s, but I guess none of that was thrash.

I think their remix of U2 will take a bit to grow on me (I kept expecting Burton to go into a death-metal growl for the chorus) and i'm not quite sure if this record is as heavy as Archetype, but so far, I quite like it.

Oh -- and I know they're not thrash -- but super-congrats to Black Sabbath for (finally) getting some well-deserved respect! I listened to "Born Again" and "Heaven and Hell" today at work on my iPod to celebrate :-)

Regards,

I just d/l'd Unearth's "The Coming Storm" album and oh-my-GAWD!!! I'm rocking the fuck out to this band!! Straight up brutal, dual harmonized guitar attack, lots of breakdowns, and very suprisingly adept leadwork for a young american band(read: they can shred)... I recommend this album to any fans of Swedish melodic death(At The Gates, In Flames, Dark Tranquility, etc.) or american melodic metalcore(aka "Gothencore") such as Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage, or Darkest Hour(whose new album "Undoing Ruin" is also FABULOUS!)

As previously reported, Anthrax' official website has been revamped, and re-uploaded with a countdown clock, that will mark the reopening of the bands website. According to SMN News, the countdown clock, in conjunction with the new look website, also represents an April 1st press release and conference that will announce the reuniting of the Among The Living era Anthrax. Replacing the departing John Bush, will be Joey Belladonna on vocals, rounded out by Dan Spitz and Scott Ian on guitars, Frank Bello on bass, and Charlie Benante on drums.

TESTAMENT frontman Chuck Billy has issued the following statement regarding the band's upcoming "reunion" tour:

"Well, it is really happening. Alex [Skolnick], Greg [Christian], Johnny [Tempesta], Eric [Peterson], me and Louie [Clemente], we are joining together to play some shows in Europe in May and a few in the U.S. in June. We are all stoked.

"It's funny how things work out. One day I was talking to the promoter of the Dynamo Festival in the Netherlands and he told me he had the original ANTHRAX lineup doing the show this year. I said TESTAMENT has to play the show. He asked 'What are the chances of the original TESTAMENT playing?' I said 'Hummm... That would be cool. Let me give everyone a call and ask. So I did.

"I called Alex first he said 'That [sounds] cool but let me check my schedule.' Then I [saw] Greg and asked him. He said, 'I think we can work something out.' Next call was Johnny he said 'That sounds killer,' but he had to check his tour schedule with HELMET. After all the calls, I said 'Holy shit, this really might happen.' So I'm thinking I have to call Louie. Me and Lou have kept in contact over the years and we have talked about this day so I called and he was pumped, he said he was going to start working on the songs immediately.

"If you're wondering 'Why two drummers?', it's because when this came about we knew Lou hasn't played for a while so he would need time to get his chops back for a few songs. Lou has been working hard and said things are feeling pretty good. Johnny, of course, kicks ass on our stuff, so it's always a pleasure to get to play live with Johnny.

"It's funny how things work out. In 1987 all of us were going to perform at the Dynamo festival this was our first time to ever play outside the U.S. we were very excited about the event. It was our first tour in Europe with ANTHRAX now here we are 18 years later getting all fired up about going to play the Dynamo with the guys who were there in ANTHRAX in 1987. This is going to be a very special gathering..."

Dimebag Darrell was shot and killed onstage last Wednesday night in Columbus, Ohio, just as his band, Damageplan, was beginning their performance. Also killed were the band's head of security, Jeffrey 'Mayhem' Thompson, an employee of the club, Erin Halk, and a member of the audience, Nathan Bray.

Damageplan was formed in 2003 by Dimebag Darrell and his brother, Vinnie Paul, following the disbanding of their previous group, Pantera. Damageplan’s debut album, 'New Found Power,' was released by Elektra Records in February 2004.

Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul were born and raised in Texas, the sons of country songwriter Jerry Abbott, who also owned a recording studio. The brothers formed Pantera in the early 1980s, going on to achieve multi-platinum stardom in the 1990s with their groundbreaking, uncompromising approach to metal music. They released a string of hugely influential albums, including the #1 charting 'Far Beyond Driven' and three other top ten albums. The band earned four Grammy nominations.

Other killer songs on this DVD are "Hells Brightest Hour", "Rage Of Evil" and "Levitations".

The festival, which is scheduled to take place in October, will be a benefit for "a kid with cancer and his family," according to Walter. "Last night, I went to TESTAMENT practice and the band, the father of the kid, Reality Check TV and me did some photos for the press release, so it's on. Now the other bands will start confirming. Wait 'till you hear the lineup! Some surprises for sure — a hell of a Halloween show (tentatively). I was asked to be a part of the 'Thrash of The Titans' staff, [but] I'm not the organizer this time round (the father of the kid [is]), but I'll do my best to help and give my advice. 'Thrash of The Titans' stands for helping people through Thrash Metal Titans... and that's what everyone will get!"

The original "Thrash of The Titans" concert took place in August 2001 in San Francisco and featured performances by HEATHEN, FORBIDDEN EVIL (a.k.a. FORBIDDEN), FLOTSAM AND JETSAM, SADUS, ANTHRAX, S.O.D., DEATH ANGEL, EXODUS and TESTAMENT/LEGACY.

Work on "Devils on Both Sides" began in early 2003, with producer Neil Kernon (NEVERMORE, CANNIBAL CORPSE, DEICIDE) originally slated to handle the whole CD. The addition of new vocalist Norman Skinner meant that the group were forces to re-write the songs and re-cut vocals which were originally done with their previous singer, causing a conflict in Neil's schedule, which resulted in the group bringing in Juan Urteaga (VILE, SKINLAB) to finish the CD. "Things worked out great as Juan is pure metal and has a passion for all things heavy!" the band write. "The new material has some surprises as we were able to bring in some more melodic aspects due to Mr. Skinner's killer vocal range. No worries there’s plenty of metal going on and we’re still laying out the killer riffs!" Final cover artwork for the CD was produced by IMAGIKA drummer Henry Moreno.

If you haven't bought it yet, I say head out and pick it up A.S.A.P.

Index Case opened, then Soil (Dope was supposed to be there but had vehicle difficulties, which made me happy), and Mushroomhead headlined. It was a great show. I saw them once before January 17, but tonight was even better. I was right next to the stage, and Bronson (guitar) handed me a pic. I also had a Soil pic land in my fucking pocket! That was amazing. I got Soil's set list, and signatures on it by the bassist and one guitarist. All in all, it was a great night...some weirdo even tried to expose himself onstage! Anyway, its a shame you missed out, but if this tour rolls through your town, check it out. My friend and I will probably even go again tomorrow in Denver! Mushroomhead is soo great... :)
